Open Source jQuery UI Components
By admin on Feb 24, 2008 in open source
I am looking at jQuery recently since it is getting more and more popular. I am using YUI and Ext and jQuery is the next Javascript library I am really interested to look at.
Here are the 2 jQuery interface components that I am currently trying
As quoted from the website, jQuery UI is a set of themable widgets and interactions, built on top of the jQuery JavaScript Library, that you can use to build highly interactive web applications.
The core of the library revolves around different mouse interactions, namely
drag and dropping, sorting, selecting, and resizing.
On top of the core interactions are built a number of reusable widgets, including accordions, date pickers, dialogs, sliders, and tabs.
As quoted from the website, Interface is a collection of rich interface components which utilizes the lightweight JavaScript library jQuery. With this components you can build rich client web applications and interfaces with the same simplicity as writing JavaScript with jQuery.
IMHO, there are some overlaps in terms of the functionalities but the 2 libraries can complement each other for certain features.

I have played with both YUI and Ext. Both are wonderful, but I fell in love with jQuery for its simple syntax and beautiful code. A bonus was the nice filesize. Ext is ENORMOUS and sometimes isnt the best solution for that reason alone.
Ext does provide a ton of gorgeous UI elements, but it comes at the price of a download too large for some websites. Intranet sites may be perfect for this but on the Internet – Im not so sure.
Check out jQuery when you get the chance and I am sure you will love it too.
