TOra – An Toad Alternative for Oracle

I bet that everyone will know Toad if they use Oracle. Sometimes I think it is Oracle strategy not to have a user friendly tool so that we will need to pay for its support or hire a DBA 🙂

Anyway, I found that most people working on Oracle, whether they are developers or DBAs, rely heavily on Toad. I was using Toad also in some of my past projects. However, at that time I was wondering if there is any good tool similar to Toad. I found TOra.

In short, TOra is similiar to Toad but it is open source. I normally use it on Linux, but it claims to be able to run on Linux, Windows and Solaris.

I would encourage you to try it out. It is a good alternative to Toad for Oracle !

    Hi

How many more tools are there that are similar to TOAD?

In my opinion EMS SQL manager might also be the replacement for TOAD as well as Oracle’s free SQL Developer.

    Please comment.

SQLDeveloper works nice for Oracle but I don’t know that it has been ported to Linux. EMS SQL manager is not free, requires windows, and is db specific (they sell one for only oracle, only mysql, only postgres, etc…). Really lame, why buy icecream scoop if it can only dip vanilla? But I was impressed with EMS SQL manager as it is the most feature rich tool around especially for Postgres. One other tool would be SQuirreL, http://www.squirrelsql.org, it is written in Java so you just need JDBC driver and OS with Java JVM support.

SQL Developer is available for operating systems with a jvm. Just download the “Oracle SQL Developer for other platforms” edition from: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html
